| | Song Story |
The melody of this song stems from the 18th century. It is similar to Valentin Rathgeber`s "Wann d` Hoffnung nicht waer" from the "Tafel-Confect" II, Augsburg 1737. This melody also appears (in Minor) in the first four measures of the 1. Minuet in W. A. Mozarts "Haffner-Serenade" (Koechel-Verz. No. 250), Salzburg 1776.
The song itself appeared as "Bauernlied" in a songbook in 1884.
In 2002, counter tenor David Solomons collaborated with Reinhold Behringer in creating this recording. David sang his parts solo, and Reinhold mixed the voice recording with his orchestration. The realistic string orchestral samples are from the Garritan GigaString Libraries.
The orchestral arrangement is a new interpretation of the ideas appearing in the lyrics. Musical motives appear parallel to the descriptions in the text.
| | Song Lyrics | | (There are many versions of the actual text lyrics. This version is a combination of various verses into a four-verse song).
1. Im Maerzen der Bauer
Die Roesslein einspannt,
Er bringt seine Felder
Und Wiesen in Stand.
Er ackert, er egget,
er pflueget, er saet
Und ruehrt seine Haende
von Morgen bis spaet.
2. Den Rechen, den Spaten,
Den nimmt er zur Hand
Und setzet die Wiesen
und Wege instand.
Auch pfropft er die Baeume
Mit edlerem Reis,
Und spart weder Arbeit
Noch Muehe und Fleiss.
3. Die Knechte und Maegde,
und all sein Gesind,
das regt und bewegt sich
wie er so geschwind.
Sie singen manch munteres,
Froehliches Lied
Und freu`n sich von Herzen,
Wenn alles schoen blueht.
4. Und ist dann der Fruehling
Und Sommer vorbei,
So fuellet die Scheuer
Der Herbst wieder neu.
Und ist voll die Scheuer,
Voll Keller und Haus,
Dann gibt`s auch im Winter
Manch froehlichen Schmaus.
